UPCOMING EVENTS
The Right Time Stands Ready: The Last Songs of Johnny Cash On Good Friday, March 29, at 7:30pm, the Second Christian Church of Kittery will be offering a night focused on the spiritual journey of Johnny Cash as expressed on his final studio recording, American IV: The Man Comes Around. The last studio album released during his lifetime, American IV is a critically acclaimed collection of songs (mostly the songs of others) that had deep meaning for Cash as he confronted his own mortality nearing the end of his life. In this Good Friday Musical Meditation, Pastor Brad Hirst will offer some spoken words that connect the music and lyrics through the lens of the story of the season, and the sacred occasion of Good Friday. It is especially apt for someone called “God’s lonely man. The man in black,” the one who sang, “I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,” including those “who’ve never read or listened to the words that Jesus said.” Johnny Cash sang about saints and sinners all mixed up together. His music fuses his full humanity, his complex spirit, and his faith. For this special worship service, Mike Effenberger, Second Christian's Music Director, has arranged the tracks and assembled an all-star band featuring Jason Anick, Eric Klaxton, Marjorie Senet, Nick Phaneuf, and Stu Dias. There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be received to benefit non-profits serving our community. Our deep gratitude goes to the Pine Street Church of Boulder, Colorado, and their Pastor, Reverend Andrew Daugherty, for sharing their inspiration and creativity for this event. 7:30pm, 6:30 doors. |
